The Celts told all their stories and legends orally and passed them down from generation to generation. The were very superstitious about writing anything down in case it would be misinterpreted or stolen. The did, however, mark their graves with special markings now recognised as the Ogham (OH am) script.
It wasn’t until the early 8th century that Columban monks wrote the story of the Gospels in vellum (calfskin) using quills and rare and expensive dyes. They painstakingly hand wrote the words in Celtic fonts and painstakingly illustrated the first letter of each paragraph in amazing colours and Celtic designs consisting of animals and integral Celtic Knots. The workmanship is so fine that some of the detail can only be clearly seen with a magnifying glass.
Today there are many versions of these “Illuminated (highly decorated) Celtic Letters” limited only by the modern day artist’s own imaginations. Artists from all over the world love the challenge of designing and carefully decorating each of the letters of the alphabet in their own style and interpretation.
Here are some versions of Celtic Letters.
We have a selection of different styles of alphabets ready-made to save you having to try to draw them yourself!
