Celtic Art is not just about art, but, more importantly, the culture and heritage of the Celtic people. Thousands of years ago most of Europe was dominated by the Celts. Ireland and England were totally ruled by the Celts until they were overthrown by the Romans, Angles and Saxons who drove the Celts to Scotland and Ireland.
The Celts avoided written language as they believed that once their history and beliefs were transcribed they were open to misinterpretation and theft. Therefore, they told their stories through their arts and metal crafts of highly decorated jewellery and weapons.
The Celts were Druidic nature worshippers. The believed that all things in nature (plants, animals, people, earth and earth’s forces), were connected and interdependent. Many of the Celtic designs and Celtic letters of the alphabet reflect this.
They also believed that death and life were intertwined, that for each death there is a life and the cycle repeats again and again. This can be seen in the integrated knotwork where the integrate detail can be traced from one point and all the way back to the exact same point. This represents infinity itself – which has no beginning or end. (See more meanings in Celtic Designs)
People of Celtic heritage often show their pride in their heritage with ornaments, artwork and Celtic tattoos decorated with integrate Celtic designs, patterns and Celtic fonts.
The recent revival in Celtic art and Irish music and dance performances has seen a worldwide interest in Celtic designs, Celtic Letters, Celtic Fonts, Celtic Tattoos, Cards (for birthdays, weddings and other celebrations), and Irish Blessings and Proverbs.
